Costume donated as part of the Erfgoeddag of the municipality of Drogenbos. The Kaaskrabber is a character and a statue that refer directly to the nickname of the inhabitants of Drogenbos, the \"Cheese Scrapers\". This nickname illustrates the link between Drogenbos and Brussels, namely cheese. In the Middle Ages, the people of Drogenbos used to sell 'Mandjeskaas', a fresh cheese typical of the communes to the south of Brussels, to the wealthy people of Brussels. There are several possible explanations for this nickname:<\/p>\r\n\r\n
- The first is that the people of Drogenbos were so poor that, after preparing the cheese board, they scraped it to give the leftovers to their children.<\/p>\r\n\r\n
- Another explanation could be that the cheese left to dry began to mould in summer. The green mould that appeared on the cheeses had to be removed by the maturers before ripening could begin.
